Gwendraeth Valley residents could soon have traffic-calming measures on a dangerous road that has already seen one fatal accident.

Vehicles travelling at high speeds through the villages of Blaenau and Caerbryn have left many residents concerned.

Mrs E B Davies of Heol Fach had her wall demolished by cars racing around the bend at Caerbryn Square on several occasions, and is again facing the cost of having to rebuild the wall.

Mr Richards of Penygroes Road complained to Carmarthenshire County Council: “There is a desperate need for a serious review and for the introduction of suitable measures to counter the dangerous behaviour of some drivers through this village.” The latest incident on the road saw a bus shelter demolished and the structure proved expensive to replace.

County Councillor Sian Thomas said: “I have, for years, been trying to get extra traffic-calming through Blaenau and Caerbryn. We have had many serious road accidents, and unfortunately a fatality as well.”

Cllr Thomas has now managed to persuade the highways department of Carmarthenshire County Council to look into the possibility of introducing traffic-calming measures.

“I do not wish to see yet another fatal accident on this corner,” added Cllr Thomas at the scene last week.

The highways department has said new measures will include flashing warning lights, which should be brought in next year.

“I will be keeping a close eye to make sure they keep their promises,” she vowed.
