A vital Swansea Valley mental health centre could be forced to reduce its services after its funding was slashed by 15 percent.
Ystradgynlais Mind is a day facility which provides much-needed support for people with mental health problems, ranging from depression to schizophrenia.
Yet due to a 15 percent budget cut to the volunteer sector in Powys, Ystradgynlais Mind may have to reduce the number of days it is open.
“We were struggling anyway,” said Carol Stephens who runs the centre along with chair woman Caroline Morris. “We have already had to reduce the number of days we are open to four, and with this cut to our funding it could mean we have to loose another day.”
Chairwoman Caroline Morris said: “With mental illness the suffering is always very private, but Mind offers them a place to share their problems with others who are struggling with the same condition.”
Ystradgynlais Mind provides a range of activities for members, including art, creative writing and IT as well as offering education, employment opportunities and most importantly a community.
“For many of us Mind is a second home,” added Caroline.
“Here there is no judging or prejudice, it’s a comfortable environment where people can talk.”
Ystradgynlais Mind member John said: “For me this is essential. After I lost my wife, this is an escape.
“Without the company I have here three times a week, I don’t know what would happen.”
