AN Ammanford mum-to-be who tripped in a hole in the road in the town centre has said that she could have lost her baby.

Zena Downing from Betws, who is eight months pregnant, fell in a dip in the road surface on Heol Wallasey and suffered injuries to her chin, shoulder and ankle.

“I was crossing the road and I caught my foot in the hole,” she said. “I went flying to the other side of the road and slammed my face on the kerb. I think my shoulder must have hit the kerb too, because it is still sore and I also twisted my ankle.

“I’m just lucky I didn’t land on my stomach. I could have lost my baby.”

Zena was rushed to hospital as doctors feared that the accident could have brought on early labour.

The 23-year-old’s mother, Susan Gruffyd, said: “The hospital kept Zena in because she was having shockwaves that could have sent her into labour.

“She had to have four stitches on her chin and she was covered in cuts and bruises. Zena is out of hospital now but she is still in shock really.”

Mrs Gruffyd says something now urgently needs to be done about holes in road surfaces.

“That hole needs to be levelled off,” she said. “Things like this are dangerous. Four years ago I fell in Ammanford and broke my leg.”

Her daughter is calling for Carmarthenshire County Council to fix the broken road surface before it causes more serious accidents.

“The council need to get the road sorted,” said Zena. “The next person to fall in that dip in the road could be an elderly man or lady, and a fall like that could kill them.

“The council needs to stop wasting money on rubbish and sort out things like the road in Heol Wallasey.”

Mario Cresci, Carmarth- enshire County Council’s area manager, said: “As soon as the council is made aware of any potholes on public highways, we act to repair them.

“A hole in Heol Wallasey was filled in when we became aware of it last week.”
