AN AMMAN Valley school built shortly after World War One has been demolished.
Ysgol y Twyn in Garnant was flattened to make way for the council's flagship superschool Ysgol y Bedol.
The new school is nearing completion and will replace Ysgol y Twyn, as well as Glanaman CP School and Garnant CP School, which are still open.
Contractors TRJ are recycling materials from Ysgol y Twyn.
Ysgol y Bedol has been hailed as the blueprint for the future of education in Carmarthenshire.
The eco-friendly single-storey building includes a community block and a hub area, which will incorporate the main school entrance, and administration area, with two teaching blocks radiating from it.
The school hall will be the size of three badminton courts. An all-weather multi-use games pitch, which will be enclosed and floodlit, will be built at the top of the site.
The community section will host a library and IT suite.
Councillor Kevin Madge, who was present at the demolition of Ysgol y Twyn, said: "We are now moving forward.
"Our young people are the future and Ysgol y Bedol will provide first-class facilities for the 21st century.
Councillor Colin Evans added: "The Ysgol y Bedol building is outstanding.
I am sure that when people see the new facilities they will be over the moon."
