AMMANFORD deservedly earned a share of the spoils in a match that they could easily have won.

The opening half an hour was mainly uneventful, but the match suddenly sprang to life when Tex Ward had a great chance to put Ammanford a goal up with a diving header, but unfortunately his attempt went straight at the Llanwern keeper.

Nathan Wyn Jones then forced the home keeper into action twice in as many minutes only to see his efforts again saved by the busy Llanwern stopper.

Minutes before half-time the home team were left desperately defending two corners as Ammanford piled on the pressure once again.

Play then swept upfield where Rob Griffith was on hand to clear the danger for Ammanford.

With the second half just five minutes old, Nathan Jones robbed the home centre-half, but he was then fouled on the edge of the penalty area to bring a promising attack to a premature end.

Llanwern replied with a move that Rob Griffith again cleared at the expense of a corner.

It was end-to-end stuff by now with Ammanford's Steven Francis continually breaking up Llanwern's attacks.

Goalkeeper Craig Morris was in the thick of the action, pulling off three great saves within a frantic ten-minute period.

Ammanford pushed forward looking for the win they so desperately craved.

Chances still came their way, mainly created by centre-forward Nathan Jones who set up Matthew Fisher, but the youngster was crowded out just as he was about to shoot.

Disaster then struck as Llanwern took the lead after 80 minutes - much against the run of play - when a speculative lob shot from Tony Shire went over Craig Morris for a goal.

Ammanford's reply was to push players forward and they had their first reward when Gavin Morris scored in the 83rd minute.

Ammanford could have sealed the win when they broke up field with Nathan Jones and Fisher in a two-on-one situation, but the defence recovered and scrambled away a great goal-scoring chance.

Although they were desperate for the win, it was a gutsy team performance in view of the squad available, which was again depleted through injury and suspension with Paul Hughes, Mark Jones, Jamie Harris, Michael Dane, Matthew Thomas and Paul Jones all unavailable.

On Saturday Ammanford are home to Pontardawe (ko 2.15pm).
