THESE are some of the stories which made the headlines in the South Wales Guardian in the week ending Thursday, May 12, 1983.
This week's Dinefwr Borough Council elections produced mixed reactions with Plaid Cymru gaining seats from Labour and Labour gaining seats from Plaid. One shock result was for the mayor, Penygroes councillor EB Davies, of Labour, who lost his seat to Plaid Cymru. At Llandovery two members with a total of more than 40 years experience also lost their seats.
May madness hit Ammanford this Bank holiday with semi-naked people pushing wheelbarrows through the streets for charity. Ammanford Lions organised the race to raise funds for Amman Valley Hospital. Macho men wearing ballet costumes and nappies descended on the valley, stopping off at local pubs and clubs to collect for the hospital.
An Ammanford man told the Guardian how his decision to become a Roman Catholic priest gradually developed. A Catholic all his life, Kevin Walsh, of Heol Las, said: "I am really please that the parishioners are pleased with my decision."
It was good to see sport flourishing in Ammanford said Town Mayor Ken Burton. He congratulated Ammanford RFC for winning the CC Evans Cup and Betws RFC for taking the Amman Valley Cup.
