CLAIMS branding the new Llandovery library a deathtrap have been refuted by local councillor Denley Owen as "outrageous".
Plans drawn up for the first floor redevelopment of the town hall - approved at a recent planning committee meeting - have been slammed by retired building consultant Jim Scroggs who claimed that up to 50 people could be left stranded by a fire.
He also alleged that the existing stone staircase did not conform with health and safety regulations as it is too narrow and does not provide fire cladding.
But Cllr Owen, was quick to quash such fears.
"Allegations that the building could become a deathtrap in the event of a fire are absolutely outrageous," he said.
"The staircase is being modified to form a protected fire escape route and all doors leading up to it will give the necessary half hour of protection.
"A smoke detecting and fire alarm system will also be installed, as well as a disabled lift giving access to the first-floor library.
"A fire management strategy will be implemented to ensure the safe evacuation of disabled people in the event of a fire."
He added: "The fire brigade are fully aware of the plans and gave them a seal of approval in December."
Many people had lobbied for the new library to be housed in the downstairs, arched area of the town hall. At a public meeting two years ago an overwhelming 99.5 percent of Llandovery residents voted in favour of this, but Cllr Owen claims such a move was blocked by the National Assembly.
