THE mother of Pantyfynnon killer Maxine Williams is herself facing a possible jail term after she admitted assaulting two police officers.
Julie Marie Edwards, aged 42, of 57 Pantyfynnon Road, attacked the officers as they attempted to arrest her partner, Paul James Anthony Quilligan, during an incident in Llanelli on November 16.
Carmarthen magistrates were told how detectives Ivan Charles and Andrew Cotterill were travelling along Station Road on an unrelated matter when they spotted Quilligan and Edwards. As the couple passed a parked car, Quilligan, kicked the wing mirror off the vehicle.
When the detectives confronted Quilligan, aged 33, and identified themselves, he resisted arrest, banging his head on the doorframe of the police car. On seeing Quilligan being arrested, Edwards attacked the officers.
Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court that Edwards punched DC Charles head and then slapped DS Cotterill.
Both defendants denied the charges at a previous hearing even though Quilligan had apologised during interview and told officers that he could not remember the incident as he had been drunk.
The pair arrived at court more than an hour late – after magistrates had decided to proceed in their absence – and following extensive discussions with their solicitor, decided to change their pleas to guilty. Entering a basis for her plea, Edwards told the court that at the time of the incident she was under considerable stress and “emotionally vulnerable”.
“I saw the officers pushing Paul into the vehicle. His head struck the car and when I saw blood I was very concerned and upset,” she said.
“I tried to push past to help. I was reckless and accept that I struck the police.”
Peter Lowry, defending, told the court that Edwards was very sorry.
He said that Edwards had recently suffered a nervous breakdown brought on the pressures felt by her family in the wake of daughter Maxine’s conviction for the murder of Edwards’ then partner Bernard Evans at the family home on January 22, 2008.
Edwards admitted two counts of assaulting the police while Quilligan pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage and resisting arrest.
Magistrates agreed to adjourn sentencing until April 8 at Llanelli, but warned Edwards that all sentencing options would remain open to them.
