LLANDYBIE community councillors are refusing to take the closure of Penygroes surgery lying down.
They are writing a letter of complaint to MP Jonathan Edwards and the health board, registering their opposition to the decision to switch the surgery to Cross Hands.
Cllr Nesta Price said there were moves afoot to establish some sort of facility at Llandybie Hall.
“Things such as surgeries are getting further and further away from us at a time when they should be being brought closer,” she said. “A lot of people cannot afford to travel.”
Cllr Peter Roberts was annoyed that two exhibitions planned to promote the revised surgery were being staged at Cross Hands.
“There’s a hall in Penygroes which is very accessible,” he said.
Cllr Llinos Hindley insisted there was still a demand for a surgery in Penygroes, and warned that its loss raised question marks over the future of the local chemist.
“Three estates have gone up in Penygroes – it’s now bigger than Cross Hands,” she added.
*The exhibitions at Cross Hands Workingmen’s Club will be held from 10pm-7pm, Friday, June 11, and 10am-2pm, Saturday, June 12.
