OFFENCES involving the use or possession of mephedrone – commonly known as meow meow – have risen by more than 400 per cent in Carmarthenshire over the past year.
Police have rceently executed a number of warrants leading to seven arrests in total of which three – two cases of possession and one of cultivation of cannabis – were carried out in Ammanford.
Figures for April 2010 to March 2011 showeda total of 21 offences across the county. For the same period this year, 106 offences were committed, showing an increase of 404 per cent, a total of 85 more.
“Mephedrone is a Class B drug,” said Insp Eric Evans.
“Over the coming months we are planning a series of enforcement activities, and the recent warrants across the county are just the start.
People are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the tell-tale signs of using this substance.”
Mephedrone is a stimulant type drug; users feel euphoric, very alert and talkative.
However, some users feel anxious and paranoid. The longterm side effects are still largely unknown, but the drug is very addictive. Some signs to look out for after use, known as the ‘come down’, are that users can become very emotional and some can be quite aggressive.
The drug also suppresses the appetite and need for sleep.
Users will also develop a unique odour, similar to stale cat urine. They will be unable to smell it on themselves, but through perspiration it will be smelt on skin, clothes and hair.
