Cymru South: Carmarthen take the derby spoils at Ammanford

IT was a very subdued Recreation Ground, Ammanford for their Good Friday evening game with local rivals, the Old Gold of Carmarthen Town.

A very healthy attendance of 503 turned up to watch a mainly one-sided affair, especially in the first half.

Ammanford seemed to sit back and not press up on their opponents, giving Gregory Walters the Old Gold midfielder plenty of time to make the plays for his team.

Carmarthen Town’s Liam Thomas came close on two occasions, but flashed his outstretched efforts just wide of the Ammanford goal.

It seemed that it was only a matter of time before the Ammanford defensive lines were breached.

In the 41st minute Carmarthen’s Bradley Gibbings broke through and stroked the ball passed Ammanford’s goalkeeper Craig Morris to open the scoring.

On the stroke of half time lively Carmarthen fullback Jordan Vickers beat his marker, but his shirt was tugged back in the penalty area.

The officials had a clear view of the foul and awarded a penalty kick - and Liam Thomas stepped up and thumped the ball into the net to double his team’s lead.

Seven minutes into the second half Carmarthen’s Noah Daley headed his team’s third and decisive goal from close range.

Ammanford did come more into the game, but it all seemed too little to late.

Four minutes after Carmarthen’s third goal Ammanford were awarded a penalty of their own.

Ammanford’s Tristan Jenkins took the spot kick and his shot struck the inside of the post - the pace of the ball as it rebounded seemed to strike the knee of the goalkeeper and spin backwards into the net to offer the home support some consolation.

The game was then managed well by the dominating visitors to the final whistle.
