Brynamman 6 Ammanford 14

With both sets of fans looking forward to the start of the season and another flowing game of rugby it came as a big disappointment that this turned out to be an error ridden encounter.

Let us hope that this was early season nerves and a wet slippery ball.

After weeks of dry sunny weather, the quick change did affect the handling and in a dour first half where both sides had their periods of pressure poor decision making close to the line resulted in a try less first half the only points coming from the boot of the Brynamman outside half Joseph Davies, resulting with the home team leading at the half 3-0.

Ammanford started the second half the more positive and pressed the home line.

After a series of rucks close to the home line a speculative long pass on the Bryn 5 metre should have been intercepted but the ball was missed and it kindly fell into the hands of wing Elis Lewis’s hands and hope neatly dropped over the line.

Outside half Ryan Williams slotted an excellent touchline conversion to put the visitors in the lead for the first time.

Brynammans’ strength was their strong scrummaging pack that gave them plenty of good ball and disrupted the Ammanford ball.

With the pack getting them down the field and some long touch finders by full back Andre Mason the home team won a deserved penalty which Davies put over to reduce the lead.

Ammanford’s defence was led by some ferocious tackling by flanker Carwyn Morris. With the defence holding the best play of the game saw Ammanford for the first time run from inside their own 22.

The ball reached wing Mike Rees who galloped clear unfortunately the final pass could not be gathered in cleanly by the outstretched arms of full back Steffan Roberts.

A period of indiscipline and a 10m march back gave the visitors a chance to kick to the corner.

After a catch and drive with a few add on rucks the ball was moved out to Williams who found supporting prop Morgan Plimmer on his inside shoulder and he found a nice gap to go over under the posts.

The simple extras were added and Ammanford extended their lead to 6-14.

With time running out the game drifted to its end. Both sets of coaches will be looking for more clinical performances in the weeks to come.

Ammanford welcome Skewen to The Rec for their first home game of the season next Saturday. Ko 2.30.
