Cowbridge Youth 20 Ammanford Youth 21
Ammanford Youth made the trip down the M4 to Cowbridge in the first round of the National Youth Plate on Saturday.
A fast start by Cowbridge saw them take an early lead with their second-row scoring in the corner after two minutes.
The touchline conversion was missed, glancing the outside of the upright.
Ammanford immediately struck back from the kick off and from their first attack, some great interplay between full back Frazer Gregory and wing Tom Davies saw Frazer Gregory cross the line with 4 minutes gone.
Sam Potter added the conversion.
Ammanford strayed offside within their 22, giving Cowbridge an easy penalty opportunity to go back into the lead 8-7.
Noah Potter took an opportunistic quick tap penalty on the halfway line, catching the Cowbridge defence off guard.
He fed his brother Sam Potter, who put a grubber kick through behind the defence. He chased through and dribbled over the line to claim the try, also adding the conversion. Half time score 8-14.
Ammanford started the second half strongly. After five minutes Ammanford were awarded a 5m scrum following a goal line drop out going straight out into touch.
From the scrum the Potter brothers combined again, Noah looping outside Sam to cross in the corner. Sam Potter added the touch line conversion.
Even though Ammanford now had a healthy lead, Cowbridge were not finished yet.
Two long-range tries in quick succession by the Cowbridge flying winger brought the score back to 20-21 with 10 minutes to go.
Ammanford withstood a final barrage of attacks from Cowbridge.
Camped on the Ammanford try line, the Ammanford pack put their bodies on the line to defend for several phases before bundling the Cowbridge attacker into touch at the corner flag.
From the resulting lineout Ammanford cleared to touch to see out the match and move into the next round.
Player of the Match, chosen by club legend Daryl Parkin, was awarded to Sam Potter for his superb kicking display from both the tee and from hand, controlling the game throughout.
