Ammanford's Lewis Jones ends season on top form

The final weekend was held at Brands Hatch for the second visit there of 2022, as Lewis saved his best weekend of the year until last.

His first outing was Friday morning’s free practice, a cold and cloudy day where he started as he meant to go on.

Afterwards he said: “I’m really pleased with the feel of the bike giving me more confidence, which resulted in my fastest lap time at 1:32.892, finishing first place overall, but we know we need to find more though for qualifying and the two races that face us Saturday and Sunday.”

Free practice 2 later in the day was a completely different story though, as he made some changes to the bike which didn't go the way he had hoped, as in some areas he had the feeling there was no grip.

Therefore, more changes to the bike were required overnight ready for Qualifying and the race on Saturday, he was hoping for dry weather and more improvement from there.

Qualifying on Saturday morning almost went to plan, with Lewis finishing second place which he was absolutely over the moon with.

This was despite Lewis getting involved in a crash at the very end of the session, losing his front end on Paddock Hill.

Lewis felt fine after the crash, and in normal competitive sportsman style, got up and asked his sponsors what position he had finished in.

After the bike received some adjustments, it was all systems go onto race one.

Being on the front row of the grid could have been quite daunting for Ammanford’s local racing hero, but he took it all in his stride and kept his head, delivering an outstanding performance to cross the line in second place overall.

Everyone on Team Jones was so happy for him doing so well in the extremely competitive class, but Lewis was entirely focused on the final race on the final day of the season.

Another consistent performance on the Sunday allowed him to cross the line for the final time in 12th place, a little further down due to the way the lap times on Saturday decide grid spots on Sunday.

This meant he finally achieved 10th place overall in the championship, his goal from the start, and got the almighty finish of the season on the podium. Focus now turns to 2023.
