AMMAN UNITED 48 FURNACE UNITED 6

Amman United maintained their healthy lead at the top of the Division Three West B table after a comprehensive 48-6 victory over Furnace United at Cwmamman Park.

The match began with a minute’s silence for two Amman characters, Malcolm (Milkybar) Jones, former committeeman, and actor Dafydd Hywel, ”D.H.” having captained the Amman for two seasons, and also skippered the renowned Sevens side who reached the National Sevens final in 1967.

United opened the scoring, with Alex Williams and Alun Lewis combining to put wing Jac Lewis in for the opening try, and outside half Iestyn Griffiths added a superb touchline conversion.

A terrible loose pass from the Furnace prop gifted a second try to the hosts, wing Rhys Howells gobbling up the error to race in unopposed.

Amman, who had struggled to snatch a win at Llangadog previously, were now back to their best, and scrum half Alex Williams’ typical break created the space for centre Joel Foster to cross for the try.

Furnace, who had been under the cosh for most of the half, at least got on the scoreboard with a penalty from outside half Jamie Herbert before the interval.

The visitors weren’t helping themselves with some elementary errors and fumbles, but showed glimpses in attack, Joe Qualterjones, Ben Lewis, Callum Mincione and Olly Thomas at least offering some attacking options.

Herbert’s penalty reduced the arrears, but only temporarily,as replacement wing Liam Danter took a tricky pass off his laces before putting in flanker Dan Jones for the bonus point try after 50 minutes.

A yellow card for a deliberate knock-on reduced Furnace by a man, and the Reds took full advantage as captain fantastic Alun Lewis stormed over for a try from the base of a scrum, exploiting some woeful tackling.

Furnace brought on subs, Brandon Mansell included, but they shot themselves in the foot again as another yellow card for a blatant late tackle saw their full-back exit stage left, and they soon paid the price again as prop Cian Lewis crashed over for a corner try, converted by Tom Caddell.

There was still time for Rhodri Newton ,another sub, to put the icing on the cake with an injury time try in a dominant victory for the leaders, who travel for a local-derby at Llandybie on Saturday.
