Ammanford 19 Nantyffyllon 19

At the end of a long season and with promotion to the Championship West guaranteed, this last game was a chance to see what the next generation of Ammanford's rugby players had to offer, with five of this year's successful youth getting a run out.

With so many youngsters on the field, the game got off to a very quick start, but Nantyffyllon also wanted to run the ball at every opportunity.

When Ammanford’s attack broke down on the visitors' line they ran out of defence and it took a last ditch tackle from wing Elis Lewis to prevent a length of the field try.

From a 20m attacking line Nant moved the ball cleverly along the line, creating just enough space for their wing to squeeze in at the corner.

At this point, the visitors were playing all the good rugby.

The visitors attacked from deep, but the ball was dropped in midfield and second row Rhys Thomas-Jones was first to react, diving on the ball and feeding out, the ball reached youth wing Fraser Gregory, who showed good feet and turn of pace going 40m to score under the posts.

Another Youth player, Sam Potter, added the extras to make it 7-5.

Ammanford were playing well and took a chance from a scrum, moving the ball left to flying wing Lewis, who had enough space to go around his man and score in the corner.

At half-time the score was 12-5.

Ammanford started the second half the quickest and were unlucky when centre Harrison Garland was held up over the line.

Nantyffyllon's backs always looked dangerous and a lovely step by their outside half, followed by a clever grubber kick, won the visitors a 5m scrum.

Capitalising on this positivity their centre powered over from the ensuing scrum and levelled the score.

Another youth player, flanker Ieuan Phillips, came to the fore, bursting through a tackle and galloping downfield. The ruck was set up on the visitors' line, arriving at pace, from deep, and No8 Steff Rees was fed the ball and dived over.

The score was levelled when the home supporters felt that a lovely diagonal kick by Potter should have won a 50-22 line-out, however, the referee felt it was not.

Nanty went the length of the field, showing some excellent inter-passing and scoring under the posts. The scores were now level, which is how the game ended.

The bad news for Ammanford was that prop Rhodri Jones picked up an injury during the last move of the game, and club hopes he will be okay for Ammanford’s last game of the season on Tuesday - the West Wales Cup Final.
