AMMANFORD travelled to Pontarddulais on Sunday and beat their hosts by 34 runs in the Welsh Cup.

It was the second time this season that Ammanford have beaten the Bont, the earlier one being their first outing in the Premier League.

Skipper Alun Evans won the toss and decided to provide some much-needed batting practice for his team by switching the order around a bit.

He opened with Rhys Culley and Craig Maloney and both repaid his faith by putting on 95 for the first wicket.

Maloney (54) was first to go, but keeper Gareth Slade coming in at four added a further half-century with Culley, to take the score to 148 for three with ten overs to go. Culley put the previous day’s woes firmly behind him with a fine 72.

The last ten overs yielded 92 runs with barely a dot ball being bowled.

Rhydian Harris, with 22 from 11 deliveries and Huw Jenkins, with 14 from five, epitomised the confidence which has been missing from recent weeks, and Matthew Fisher (12) and skipper Evans (19) also chipped in.

Ammanford closed their 40 overs on 240 for six.

Gareth Thomas made the first breakthrough for Ammanford, when Matthew Fisher took a superb catch at cover from his bowling.

Bont had scored 55 for the first wicket in just ten overs, but this rate slowed considerably when MatthewRoberts (1-25) and Evans (1-31) came on to bowl.

Ten overs fromthese two cost just 28 runs and changed the course of the match.

From then on, Bont had to do some serious chasing and Matthew Donohue reaped the benefit, picking up three wickets for 47.

Greg Fisher (33) and Owen Morgan (45) showed some resistance for the Bont, but they were eventually all out for 206, 34 runs short.

Ammanford travel to Carew for the next round.
