Neath and District Bowls Gwaun cae Gurwen 75.5 Melyn United 73 On Saturday, the Waun played host to Melyn United of Neath having beaten the visitors when the roles were reversed some three weeks earlier.

As was the norm, the Waun played with two players short and they knew they would be up against it once again.

The Waun got off to a steady start and led 19-15 after five ends.

On completing ten ends, the visitors had their noses in front to lead 36-34 with only the Waun’s Number One rink ahead when the tea break arrived.

Hoping to improve after the interval, the Waun found themselves further behind at 49-57 after 15 ends.

Despite the fact that the home Number Two rink were unable to keep in contention with their opposite numbers due to all the luck running the way of United, the other three home rinks took control of their respective games.

High light of the match come on the 18th end of Rink Three where the home skip went to the head with six shots against him. A fine shot however saw the jack edged towards his own woods, resulting in him claiming two shot and witnessing a massive eight-point turnaround to swing the advantage to the hosts.

Another fine effort came on Rink One where, despite playing a man down, the hosts still saw off the visitors. Meanwhile on Rink Four, GcG’s bowlers outscored United by ten shots to one over the last six ends.

In the end, the hosts ran out 75.5-73 winners, allowing them to claim 12 vital league points compared to Melyn’s two.

Scores (GcG first) Rink One: A Thomas 21.75, D Mathews 15.

Rink Two: M Morgan 9.75, T Phillips 27.

Rink Three: R Lewis 19, T Pearce 15.

Rink Four: M Jeremiah 25, I Carsley 16.

Next week, the Waun travel to Briton Ferry Combine already knowing they will be short-handed due to holiday commitments.
