South Wales Junior Cricket League Bronwydd U16s (70-7) lost to Llandeilo U16s (96-4) A fascinating game of cricket was witnessed last Tuesday, when Llandeilo travelled to Bronwydd for an important clash in the South Wales Junior Cricket League. Losing the toss, the visitors were put into bat and suffered the loss of several early wickets due to an avoidable run-out and some high quality bowling from Bronwydd.
The arrival at the crease of Llandeilo’s Jack McGready (37no) provided the necessary batting aplomb to steady the innings, and he was ably supported by mid-order batsman Cai Davies (27). After the allotted 20 overs, Llandeilo had managed to accrue a reasonable 96 runs, but still found themselves around 30 short of their desired total. The Bronwydd batsmen lost no time in taking-up the chase, and were soon on par with Llandeilo’s run-rate.
Both Gethin Francis (21) and Tom Hughes (15) of Bronwydd epitomised the home team’s gritty determination, and at several points throughout the innings the result could have gone either way. The breakthrough for Llandeilo was provided by Steffan Roberts (two wickets for eight runs), who bowled with tenacity and vigour, and was instrumental in reducing the home side’s run rate. An important wicket was also claimed by Llandeilo’s rapidly improving spin bowler Wyn Smith, craftily deceiving the batsmen by turning the ball in all directions. Despite their gallant efforts, the Bronwydd batsmen fell short of the Llandeilo total by 26 runs.
Llandeilo coach James McGready was quick to praise both sides.
“It was a glorious contest and it was touch and go throughout. Full and hearty congratulations to both teams for their splendid performances.”
