After yet another impressive season of sevens rugby, the Carmarthen Warriors – a side made up largely of players from in and around the Towy Valley – will be the favourites to win this Sunday's (Aug 25) ever popular Aberaeron Sevens, writes Huw S Thomas.
The invitation side under the guidance of former Llandovery Konica Minolta Cup winning skipper Arwel Davies came desperately close to winning the Cwmtawe Sevens on August 3.
In the semi final they led the overwhelming favourites the British Army 19-12 after tries from the Aberavon pair of Steff Andrews and Richard Carter and Neath’s Gareth King only to be pipped by two very late Army tries.
A reproduction of that form will see them claim a fifth Aberaeron title in seven years but they will not have things their own way by any means.
Defending champions Bargoed and last year’s runners up the Daionic Crusaders - the old boys of Ysgol Preseli in Crymych - will pose big threats.
The Crusaders well led by scrum half Tomi James beat the Warriors 26-12 in the semi final of the 2012 tournament before being edged out 19-12 by Bargoed in the final.
Warriors player-coach and skipper Arwel Davies has gathered together a strong squad for this week-end.
“We hope to crown a good season with a win at a tournament that has always been a favourite of ours but know we will have to be on the top of our form to fend off some very strong challengers, “said Davies.
