Division Two
Undy Athletic 2 Ammanford 1
Ammanford made the long journey to Magor to kick off their league campaign in a rearranged fixture against Undy Athletic.
Despite coming away empty-handed, Ammanford’s performance will have given manager Gruff Harrison much to be pleased about.
Ammanford put in 100 percent from the off and created an early Rhys Morgan after Owen Jones had played him.
Undy soon showed their intent however and it took a superb full-length diving save from Ammanford keeper Jamie Rano to keep the scores level.
Rano was in action again, diverting a snap-shot onto the post before gathering the loose ball.
Alex Squires tested the home keeper with a stinging effort and just before the interval Ammanford felt they had a strong case for a penalty only for the officials to see things otherwise.
Ten minutes after the break, Ross Jones played Alex Thomas through on goal and he kept his cool and made no mistake in drawing out the keeper and firing home to give the visitors the lead.
Ammanford continued to push Undy back with Morgan, Jones and Squires all going close.
With Ammanford seemingly in control and the final whistle all but sight, disaster struck.
Undy levelled from a freekick on the edge opf the box on 65 minutes and followed up with another set-piece effort ten minutes later.
The goals came against the run of play and sent Ammanford reeling.
But the visitors regrouped and again began to exert pressure on the hosts and earned themselves three freekicks within shooting distance in the final ten minutes, but unlike the homesters failed to capitalise on the opportunities when presented.
Ammanford will have the chance to claim a their first three points of the season when they host Garden Village tonight (KO 6.30pm).
They travel to Penrhiwceiber on Saturday.
The club will also host its AGM at Ammanford Cricket Club on September 2 from 7pm.
