Betws 46 Cwmtwrch 0 Asda National League Division 5 South West INSPIRED by some unjustified and derogatory comments by league leaders Ystradgynlais in their report last week, the smaller Betws pack responded with another strong performance to earn the homester's revenge and a very impressive victory.
Cwmtwrch started confidently and their bigger but ageing forwards continued to test the home defence in the opening period, but despite the continued pressure they were unable to break through.
Fifteen minutes of pressure was soaked up by the homesters before some strong driving play of their own saw them take the lead, with No8 Gavin Thomas burrowing his way over the line from a move begun in their own half, with full back Gavin Davies converting.
Betws drove straight back into the visitors from the restart and young outside half Alex Vaughan on his debut from UWIC demonstrated his potential with an incisive break to set up centre Gary Davies with a clear run to the line, with the conversion by Gavin Davies quickly turning the game.
The homesters with young second row Iestyn Williams supplying the lineout possession and strong running by forwards Paul Roberts, Ian Morris, Wayne Comley, and veteran wing forward Paul Jones continued to put the visitors on the back foot, but they were only able to add a further penalty by Gavin Davies before half time for a 17-0 lead.
Five minutes into the half the home pack started the onslaught with No8 Gavin Thomas finishing off a pushover try from a five metre scrum, before Gary Davies also got his second try by breaking a couple of tackles in midfield and sprinting 30 metres to the line, with Gavin Davies adding the extras for a 29-0 lead.
A counter attack from near his own line by centre and man of the match Phil Saunders saw him link with strong running win Mark Thomas before he found replacement full-back Lee Moulten in support, with his first touch of the ball and a forty metre run earning him the try of the game.
Thirty minutes into the half the home forwards and backs were rampant and attacking from all areas with Gavin Thomas completing his hat-trick, to reward his support play after a fifty metre break from wing-forward Alun rash' Rees.
Another typical break from Phil Saunders enabled speedy wing Mathew Rees to complete the scoring when he rounded a number of players in an exhausted visiting defence to complete a very impressive all-round performance.
Betws 2nds were unlucky when they had a try under the posts disallowed at the end of an entertaining 35-29 defeat at Lampeter in the Llanelli and district league.
