AMMANFORD Under 8s were the hosts for a mini rugby tournament with two Cefneithin sides and Amman United visiting.
The first game was against a strong Cefneithin A side with early attacks by the Cefneithin team resulting in a couple of tries, putting Ammanford behind, but Ammanford's first try came from a well-worked run from Ciaran Slee.
Cefneithin kept attacking with good passing phases which resulted in a number of tries and Ammanford's Aled Phillips replied to finish 5-2 down at halftime. The second half saw Ammanford return a stronger team with very good defending by Joshua Jones and Liam Gleaves and a couple of tries by Aled Phillips, however Cefneithin stayed on top with an 7-4 win.
Ammanford's second game against Cefneithin B started with a more confident appearance. Ciaran Slee opened with the first try, to be equalled by Cefneithin's Dylan Jones. Liam Gleaves cut through the oppositon's defence for Ammanford's second and Mogs bach stopped Ammanford's Aled Phillips from scoring the third try. However, Lloyd Coombes later made a lengthy run to the line and allowed Liam Gleaves to score in the corner.Morgan Diamond opened the score for Cefneithin in the second half to close the gap. Shane Dening's individual run then allowed Evan Davies to pass to Robert Jones to ensure Ciaran scored his second try of the match. Another try by Mogs bach kept Cefneithin in contention, but Lloyd Coombes and Aled Phillips scored a couple more tries resulting in the hosts winning 6-4.
The third game against Amman United continued with Ammanford improving their game. The defence was strong and in attack the passing between Dylan Gibson and Evan Davies resulted in two near tries. The team's persistence paid off and Liam(2) and Aled scored for a 3-1 halftime lead. The second half saw Lloyd Coombes make a very determined wander through the defence to score and extend the lead, followed by a couple more tries by Aled Phillips. Hywel Coombes, Robert Jones and Joshua Jones were selfless and persistent in their defence and kept Amman United's try tally down. Ciaran finished the game with a dash for the corner, to finish in a win 6-3.
The fine weather complimented the enjoyable day's mini rugby witnessed by many parents and spectators. Good luck to the side in next season's encounters.
