YOUTH product Jamie Davies was the toast as his last minute try snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for a lacklustre Amman in their last league match on Wednesday evening.

On a rock hard pitch due to the dry weather, sixteen marauding forwards made Cwmaman park look like the Serengetti Plains. A herd of buffaloes would have not kicked up more of a dust bowl!

Amman began quite well in a typical end of season encounter, both sides with little to play for. A dazzling wing run from dangerman Jamie Davies almost creating an early try, but he was tackled inches short, Skewen having a player yellow carded for a professional foul in the process. However, good Amman play soon bothered the scoreboard, centre Stan Manning on the initial burst, several phases enjoyed, before with a man over, Jamie Davies couldn't fail to cross in the corner.

United continued to press, Adrian Thomas and Karl Worsfold combining to almost create a second try, and full back Dean Williams' burst and long pass should have been a try, but as Jamie Davies again dived for the corner, the referee disallowed for a double movement.

Skewen began to enjoy some good possession, and were rewarded with a try after 35 minutes, and a penalty on the stroke of halftime gave the visitors an 8-5 advantage.

The second half petered out largely in the sunshine; there were flashes from Amman, Gavin Elliott's charge creating panic in the Skewen defence, while Dean Williams; express pace created openings, and Steve Phillips' strong running were a feature. Amman should have scored a try with six minutes to go, but as Rhys Thomas burst through and put in forward Stuart Davies, the latter couldn't quite ground the ball.

Skewen had the better of the second half on the whole, but for Amman, the script could not have been written better, for, fittingly, in injury time, young Jamie Davies, (for it had to be him), cut in on a superb angle to scorch in for the winning try, converted by the boot of skipper Adrian Thomas.

Matchball sponsors were Roy Morgan (Butcher), Ray Thomas (Car sales), and R and S Motors (Raven Garage).

Amman United meanwhile take on Cwmllynfell in the CC Evans Cup at Cwmaman park this Wednesday, (tonight), 7pm kick off.
