A BEAUTIFULLY polished unbeaten century from Matthew Fisher helped Ammanford to a cracking victory over last year's champions Neath at the Gnoll.

Neath got away to something of an ambiguous start with the first over yielding ten runs for the home side but also the important wicket of Tony Cottey, formerly of Glamorgan, Sussex and Ammanford.

The home side maintained the pace with the first ten overs bringing 60 runs until skipper Craig Moloney brought himself on to try and break the runaway partnership, which he did with his third ball.

Another fine strategic decision resulted in a double bowling change and cue the appearance of spinners Matthew Fisher and Gareth Grant.

This changed the game and the run rate cooled and wickets fell, though Neath still managed to reach 207 before being all out in the final over.

The Neath total was probably a good 50 short of the total Ammanford must have been anticipating during the early stages of Neath's innings.

Grant had raided four of his former club's wickets, supported by Fisher with two and Moloney with three.

There was nothing ambiguous about Ammanford's start.

It was a straightforward disaster. After 13 overs, they'd crept to 26 for two with Gary Phillips and Steffan Jenkins back in the shed.

But for the second time in the match, the appearance of Matthew Fisher - this time in tandem with the in-form Huw Jenkins - signalled a sea change in proceedings.

The Ammanford pair took the score to 142 before Jenkins was dismissed for 52 in the 36th over.

Fisher refused to let this drawback disturb his concentration, and within a further 11 overs the game had been won without further loss, Fisher having reached his ton without giving the shadow of a chance.

The finale was provided with typical flamboyance from Huw Evans who hit the winning 10 runs in two balls including a six to the longest part of the Gnoll boundary.

Ammanford gained the maximum 26 points from this encounter with last year's top team, and look forward with confidence to next week's visit of Gowerton to the Park.
