Ammanford showed remarkable resilience to get the better of an excitingly unlikely draw against Gowerton at the Park in a rain affected match sponsored by GAP Motor Factors.
With chief groundsman Jeff Roach surprised that the match was going ahead, it was not a good toss to lose as torrential overnight rain had seeped under the covers and soaked most of the track. As it was, the game was reduced to 36 overs and Gowerton, on winning the toss, had not the slightest hesitation in asking Ammanford to bat.
Within minutes, openers Steffan Jenkins and Rhydian Harries had trudged disconsolately back to the pavilion as the new ball, sponsored by LA Warehouses, skidded through their defence. It was left to Matthew Fisher (23) and Huw Jenkins (38) to establish some stability. They managed to put on 50, though progress was understandably slow. Huw Evans was the only other contributor of substance with 20, and a regular fall of wickets enabled Gowerton to restrict Ammanford to 149 for nine after their 36 over allocation. Mason, Capon and Ikram took a couple of wickets each for the visitors.
With the appreciable advantage of knowing exactly what was needed, Gowerton set about their task with cool efficiency. At the 20 over mark, they had reached 70 for just one wicket, opener Arwel Thomas (77) looking particularly comfortable in still awkward conditions.
Once again, though, the whole complexion of the match changed with the introduction to the attack of spinners Grant and Fisher. Gowerton were still looking hot favourites with 55 runs needed from the remaining nine overs and six wickets in hand. With two overs left, and another man down, they still needed 15 runs. Grant bowled a crucial penultimate over which took another wicket and yielded just two runs, which turned the heat right back on Gowerton to get 13 runs from the final over from Matthew Fisher. The young spinner was more than equal to the task, picking up three wickets for just four runs. Gowerton finished on 140 for eight.
Unlikely though it had earlier seemed, Ammanford came off the better in this exciting encounte, gaining 13 points to Gowerton's 11. Next week they visit Ynystawe.
