BETWS overcame the odds to deny Penybanc a grand slam of trophies with a battling performance to earn a dramatic extra time victory, with man of the match Phil Saunders scoring in the last minute.

Betws were always behind. Outside half Matthew Williams put Banc ahead with an early penalty. Full back Matthew Rees responded with a penalty mid-way through the first half but scrum-half Matthew Ladd soon regained the lead when he darted through from a five-metre scrum.

Penybanc were dominating the line-out through their captain James Bush and they extended their lead when speedy full-back Hywel Thomas entered the line at pace to break the Betws defence and sprinted through from 25 metres to give Penybanc a deserved 13-3 half-time lead.

In the second half it was Penybanc who again applied the pressure but dogged defence kept Betws in the game and eventually their dangerous counter attacks were rewarded when centre Phil Saunders collected a chip ahead to score and reduce the defecit.

Betws finished the half strongly and stunned Penybanc when minutes from the end the ball was spread to wing Rhys Williams who scampered over in the corner to level at 13-13.

In extra time Penybanc regained their composure and again dominated territorially with Matthew Williams once more putting them ahead with a penalty.

However, Betws again refused to buckle and their adventurous play was rewarded when a quick drop-out was gathered by Phil Saunders before linking with influential brothers Freddy and Harry Morris. It was Saunders who was again in support to finish off a tremendous 75 metre move which proved to be the winning try just a minute from the end of extra time with outside half Freddy Morris adding the conversion.
