Cwmaman United got their season off to a good start with a win in the Welsh Cup against Tonyrefail BGC.

Despite playing away from home, Cwmamman earned a 3-1 victory, demonstrating a high standard of passing football.

This marked the beginning of the competitive 2024/25 season for Cwm, kicking off their campaign in the Rhondda for the first qualifying round of the cup.

Among the starting lineup was new recruit, Alfie Phillips, with fellow new signings Ryan Gibbons and Myles Perkins starting, and winger Dan Briggs on the bench.

The initial stage of the encounter saw Tonyrefail's strong defence maintaining the upper hand in aerial challenges.

However, Cwm's passing game soon took control, with Perkins and Cam Berry dominating the midfield.

A solid performance from Iestyn Evans, Evan Gibbs, Cam Williams and Charlie Davies held the backline, setting an optimistic tone for Cwm.

Their growing control saw them net three goals within 16 minutes.

Elliot Smith struck at the 12th and 28th minute, with Berry adding to the scoreline in the 19th minute.

Just as the victory seemed certain, Tonyrefail replied with an unstoppable shot from Dan Millard, momentarily upsetting the balance of the game.

Committing to the quick-paced play, Cwm continued to create chances.

However, their momentum was tested in the 60th minute when Gibbons received two consecutive yellow cards, leading to a red card and leaving Cwm a man down.

This allowed Tonyrefail to pose a few threats of their own, but Jack Sullivan, the Cwm goalkeeper, put up a strong performance.

Enhancing the team's performance and creating trouble for Tonyrefail, Taylor Smith showed prowess on the flank.

Tonyrefail couldn't capitalise on their pursuits and Cwm introduced Briggs and Gorman to see out the remainder of the game.

As the match concluded, Tonyrefail's Thomas Williams also received his second yellow card and a subsequent red.

The victory offers a momentum boost for Cwm as they prepare for the second round draw scheduled for Thursday.

Their Macron league campaign is set to begin with a heavy clash against Penlan AFC at Grenig Park on the evening of August 6 at 7pm.
