Llandybie RFC lost out in a tough match against Pontyates.

Llandybie faced a physical challenge against a large, experienced Pontyates side in a match played at Pontyates for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

It took just five minutes for the home side's centre to break through Llandybie's defence, scoring a converted try, which was followed by a penalty from Llandybie's Chris Powell.

Unfortunately for Llandybie, scrum half Nate Richards had to leave the pitch due to a leg injury, and was replaced by Rhys Jones.

Pontyates extended their lead to 10-3 with a penalty and added a second try soon after.

Despite being under pressure, Llandybie began to find their rhythm, with a series of strong carries from players including Josh Powell, Ioan Rees, and Keri Davies.

A high tackle on Keri Davies resulted in a yellow card for a Ponty player, which allowed Powell to kick a goal, narrowing the gap.

Pontyates' full-back, Wayne Williams, was instrumental in turning defence into attack, and Llandybie began to build momentum. Williams went over for a try, converted by Powell to bring the score to 15-10 in favour of Pontyates.

Keri Davies released Williams, who in turn set up Cellan Ingram Jones to score in the corner, giving Llandybie their first lead of the match at 15-18.

As the first half drew to a close, Llandybie remained ahead by three points, thanks to their fighting spirit and steadily improving performance.

However, the second half saw Llandybie struggle against the heavier pack of Pontyates.

Despite the pressure, young props Lloyd Thompson and Brendan Chandler remained competitive, and Ryan Davies made significant ground with a burst.

The hosts levelled the scores when Pontyates converted a penalty.

Both sides missed opportunities, but Pontyates managed to kick another one to regain the lead.

From a line-out, the home side's big centre scored his second converted try, extending their lead to 28-18.

Llandybie, however, were not ready to give up.

In a bold move, they turned down a shot at goal, which would have secured them a losing bonus point, instead opting for a more ambitious play in pursuit of a win.

Unfortunately, a dropped pass followed by a kick from Pontyates resulted in a penalty try awarded by the referee, sealing the match at 35-18.

Despite the defeat, Llandybie's 19-year-old number eight, Ryan Davies, stood out and was awarded man of the match.

Llandybie's next match is away to Bynea, as they look to bounce back from this narrow defeat.
