Swalec League Division 4 West Betws have experienced a difficult opening period in Division 4 West, losing their three away fixtures, albeit to the top teams in the division, but remaining unbeaten at home with another convincing win against visitors Trimsaran.
It was the visitors who started the stronger but on their first attack of the game Betws were awarded a penalty which outside half Aled Parry converted.
Although dominating territorially from this point on, basic errors cost the homesters dear and they wasted numerous opportunities.
It was 35 minutes into the game before they increased their lead when number eight Gavin Thomas broke from a scrum deep inside his own half to set wing Rhys Williams on a jinking run. He found centre Gary Davies in support to score, Parry converting.
Trimsaran hit back immediately with a committed forward effort which sucked in the home defence to create the overlap for wing Phil Griffiths to score in the corner, centre Dafydd Latham adding the conversion.
With the last play of the half the homesters regained their ten point lead following a short range scrum, with Gary Davies unstoppable on a powerful charge to the line. Parry added the conversion for a 17-7 half time scoreline.
Trimsaran hit back again in the first minute of the second half with a penalty from Latham, but from this point Betws took full control.
They dominated set piece play and another powerful scrum 25 metres out enabled Parry to break before linking with centre Phil Saunders, and Thomas was in support to take the scoring pass, Parry converting.
A turnover on halfway by Thomas again caught the visiting defence in disarray and quick passing put Saunders clear to sprint 40 metres to the line, again Parry converting.
A further penalty led to a short range lineout for Betws and man-of-the-match Thomas stormed through from 15 metres after wing forward Joe Adams had supplied the possession. Parry again added the conversion before flying wing Rhys Williams added Betws’ sixth and final try as he outpaced the defence from 40 metres in the final move of the game.
Inevitably Parry added the extra points, a faultless kicking display giving him a personal tally of fifteen points in the bonus point win.
Betws will be looking to improve their away record this Saturday when they visit Hendy.
