Pencoed 18 Ammanford 11 Swalec League Division 2 West AMMANFORD travelled to Bridgend last Saturday and somehow lost against Pencoed.

Despite having to make five changes from the side that beat Cwmavon by 40 points, the visitors paid the penalty for not putting this game to bed by half-time.

Ammanford from the start were all over the home side with the pack going well even without No8 Chris Jones and captain Mark Jones.

Centre Justin Lewis put over a penalty to lead after 15 minutes play.

Ammanford were dominating the play but the threequarters were having a very poor day at the office, passes were dropped and wrong options taken.

Scrum half Ioan Jones made two clean breaks, but again nothing came in the way of tries.

Pencoed drew level with their full back putting over a penalty. Justin Lewis put the visitors in front with another penalty. But within minutes the score was again 6-6 from another Pencoed penalty.

Ammanford were then shocked, as the hosts scored a breakaway try.

From the restart things got worse for Ammanford, Pencoed’s full-back put a huge kick down field and into touch five metres out and from a rolling maul the forwards crossed for the second try to increase the lead to 18-6. From this point Ammanford again pegged the home side in their own half.

With Richard Gregg and Shaun Miles supplying plenty of line out ball, Ammanford hammered away but again the three-quarters could not get their act together. With the pack going strong Ammanford scored their try from a lineout.

Hooker Jason Rosser sent young prop Dylan Cooper clear, the youngster sent his pass back to Rosser, who made ground into the home 22, and his inside pass sent Cooper over for a well-worked try, cutting the lead to 18-11.

Ammanford were now well on top, outside half Mathew Bronham, was held up over the line on two occasions, but although the visitors kept up the pressure on the home line, Ammanford failed to get the tries they needed.

Pencoed ran out winners by 18-11.

A poor result for Ammanford, but once again, they picked up a vital bonus point.

Ammanford’s young flanker Rhodri Danter playing out of position at No8 again played well and was voted man of the match.
