Hendy 5 Betws 48 Swalec League Division 4 West Betws grabbed their first away points of the season and did it emphatically as the bigger home pack quickly ran out of steam and allowed the visiting back division an abundance of posession.

Injuries and non-availability left the visitors fielding a completely new back-row in Owen Pritchard, Keith Evans and Gethin Harries, but they stepped up to the mark and benefited from playing behind a dominant front five.

Hendy applied the early pressure but ten minutes into the game it was the visitors who opened the scoring when outside-half Aled Parry counter-attacked and collected his chip to put man-of-the-match Keith Evans clear to score.

Another counter-attack from Parry quickly followed and this time full-back Mathew Rees collected the kick ahead to put wing Rhys Williams clear to score.

With the front row of Arwel Davies, Ian Morris and Gareth Jones dominating the scrums, the homesters found themselves on the back foot for the remainder of the game with No8 Gethin Harries and Owen Pritchard rewarded for their support play with further tries.

Wing Rhys Williams was unlucky when touching the line as he rounded his opposite wing with a 60-metre run to the line, but centre Phil Saunders scored the fifth try for the visitors after another powerful scrum, with the conversion by Parry making it 29-0 at the interval.

Betws continued to dominate the second half but their fluency was disrupted by regular personnel changes.

A series of close range scrums eventually enabled Keith Evans to power through for his second try, with Parry converting to extend the lead.

Hendy reduced the defecit when the visitors were caught out by a quickly taken penalty for wing Emyr Lewis to cross in the corner.

With the homesters tiring the scrum became more of a problem and the visitors took full advantage, enabling full-back Mathew Rees to score after a well timed run into the line, and Aled Parry adding the final try after Keith Evans had robbed the home scrum-half at a close range scrum.

Unfortunately Betws 2nds were unable to complete a winning double as they lost narrowly 19-18 to visitors Pontyberem who scored the winning try in the last minute.

This Saturday, Betws host Cardiff University in WRU Cup.
