Mother-of-one Maxine Williams has been convicted this afternoon of the murder of her mother's partner at his Ammanford home.

Williams, aged 22, burst into tears and fled from the dock at Swansea crown court as the jury returned a unanimous verdict.

The judge, Mr Justice Nigel Davis, said he would sentence Williams tomorrow morning to allow defence barrister Paul Thomas QC time to prepare his plea for mitigation.

Mr Justice Davis said the only sentence – life - was prescribed by law. But he would have to determine the number of years Williams must serve behind bars before being allowed to apply for parole.

There were gasps and shouts of "Yes" from the public gallery as the verdict was announced.

The court had heard how Williams stabbed Bernard Evans, aged 42, in the arm during a row at the home in Pantyffynon Road, that he shared with Williams' mother Julie.

The stab severed an artery and he bled to death.

During a 999 call by Julie Williams her daughter could be heard in the background threatening to eat Mr Evans' body.

After her arrest Williams, of Pembrey, gave police various accounts of what had happened, including claims that it had been an accident and that she had stabbed him in self defence because she thought he was about to attack her.

But in other accounts she said she had been planning to kill Mr Evans for months and that she was glad he was dead.

Williams claimed he had been violent towards her mother and that she had decided to "do him in."

But when it came to her trial Williams refused to enter the witness box to explain which account she now relied on.
