AFTER the disappointment of last week’s Swalec Cup reversal, Bryn kept up their impressive home form with a bonus point victory over a dogged Tycroes outfit.
Swiftly on the offensive following some excellent lineout play by second row Gareth Huw Williams, Bryn soon went desperately close as prop Shaun Davies was held up over the line by a last-ditch tackle. Offside at the next scrummage, however, was to cost Tycroes dearly as Greens’ scrum half Dafydd Jones slotted the penalty for an early 3-0 lead. Failure to clear under pressure soon created more problems for the visitors as wing Dean Williams set off on a sidestepping counter attack.
Good sleight of hand by prop Owain Jones, linking with Rhydian James, saw the full back scorch through from 20 metres as Bryn opened up the lead to 8-0. Tycroes soon bounced back with well struck penalty as Bryn were caught offside at the next ruck.
With Jones replying in similar fashion five minutes later Bryn then led 11-3 on the half hour.
Finally however, with Bryn opting for a tap penalty, Tycroes failed to retreat ten yards and were promptly penalised for encroaching.
Jones once again took full advantage, converting the three points as Bryn led 14-3 at the interval. Good pressure by the Bryn front row, led by hooker Steffan Weaver-Davies, saw the Greens win a strike against the head at first scrummage of the second period. With the visitors in defensive disarray, Bryn took full advantage as the ball was moved swiftly along the threequarter line.
Seizing the opportunity, wing Dean Williams showed scintillating pace out-manoeuvring at least three defenders for a superb score as Bryn led 19-3.
A sublime offload by centre Stuart Herbert minutes later saw full back Rhydian James slice through for his second five pointer as Bryn extended the lead to 24-3.
Any thoughts that Tycroes would now be overrun however were soon dispelled as the visitors launched a determined offensive.
Nevertheless Bryn were determined to have the last word and with replacement flanker Mike Richards surging forward quick ruck ball was secured once more.
Outside half Paul Davies’s assured pass to wing Dean Williams saw the Bryn flyer race home for the all important bonus point score. Full back Rhydian James’s touchline conversion rounded off Bryn’s account for a final scoreline 31-3.
