Burry Port RFC received a special visit from Scarlets and Wales internationals Rhys Priestland, Aaron Shingler and Ken Owens this week as the region’s community activity picks up a pace.
The three internationals joined the Scarlets’ Community Department on the road as part of the region’s wider community activity visiting regional clubs to lend a hand with training sessions for mini and junior sides.
Burry Port RFC, a club that has seen a number of Scarlets players past and present develop through their ranks including Kirby Myhill, Darren Daniel and Mark Perego, received a visit from the Scarlets on Monday 30th September as part of the region’s Community Roadshow.
With a strong focus on encouraging participation, teamwork and fun through rugby the West Wales region are delighted to learn that Burry Port RFC have seen 19 new players join the club due to the training session organised by the Scarlets and the region’s WRU Development Officers.
Scarlets outside half Rhys Priestland, who was named Man of the Match after the victory against Edinburgh last weekend, said: “We had a fantastic time at Burry Port; the children were really enthusiastic and really got stuck in to the activities.
“It’s always great to come out to clubs across the region and see the young players in their Scarlets jerseys and really keen to get involved in rugby.
“We’re delighted to learn that we’ve been able to help by encouraging more young members to join and the club will hopefully enjoy a successful season.”
Burry Port Junior Chairman Geraint Davies said: "As a club we would like to thank the Scarlets Players for attending a training session with all age groups from under 7s to under 11s.
“Rhys Priestland ,Ken Owens and Aaron Shingler were highly enthusiastic and passed on their vast knowledge to the young players who thoroughly enjoyed the fun session.
“They also came back to the club where they spent time signing autographs and having photos. As a result of their attendance we had an extra 20 children throughout the different age groups.”
The Scarlets Community Roadshow sees the region's development officers and players head out into the region to offer training sessions at each of the regional clubs with a strong focus on encouraging participation, teamwork and fun through rugby.
